Evening Talk: 'The Hidden Histories of Newark Castle: Kings, Queens, and Knights'

A FREE talk as part of Heritage Open Day. Newark Castle was the life and soul of medieval Newark, with its royal visitors, fairs, and trade markets adding to the bustling lives of everyday people. But what was life really like in the bishop of Lincoln's palace, his home away from home? What happened the night King John died in 1216? And how did the castle change over the centuries? In this talk, forgotten stories of Newark Castle and its place in the history of the town will be unveiled, bringing together the kings, queens, knights, and people of Newark to show what it was like to live in medieval Newark. Dr Gabrielle Storey is a historian of medieval history, specialising in the monarchy and forgotten stories of marginalised groups. Her talk will draw upon the research she has undertaken for the Newark Castle Gatehouse Project, highlighting Newark's medieval history and its role prior to the seventeenth-century civil war.
